Stardust and the Fisher F75

We already knew the Fisher F75 was a great machine. Now it’s world famous as the detector of choice for the latest cable hit The Meteorite Men. If you’ve watched the show, you know they find a lot more than meteorites on the way and really how often does a metal detector rate as a main character on TV? We’re guessing these guys have put in more detecting hours than just about anyone so if they still like it after that….

You can buy the Fisher F75 from Amazon with free shipping or pay slightly more and get a photo and a meteorite from the guys. We’ll leave that choice up to you. (price comparison as of day of posting…)

Either way, get out there and find some treasure!

yep, we have an affiliate arrangement with Amazon – keeps your data safe and you know who you’re buying from.

Getting started with the Bounty Hunter detector

We get more queries by far on the Bounty Hunter than any other detector. So it seems only fair if Santa (or related birthday elves) is going to be dropping one off at your house to help you get started as quickly as possible on your way to finding treasure.

If you’ve never metal detected before, the owner’s manual can be a little intimidating, not to mention obscure. And that’s assuming you even try to read it – what exactly does “swing slowly and steadily” mean? There’s no doubt that YouTube is the novice detector’s best resource outside of an experienced buddy or club.

Now if you’re ready for some accessories to spruce up your Bounty Hunter detector – check out what Amazon has to offer: Bounty Hunter Accessories (and yes, that’s an affiliate link – it won’t cost you more!)

5 reasons to get involved in metal detecting

On the fence?  Not sure metal detecting is really the hobby for you?  Well, it’s not all Civil War buffs and coin collectors. Here are five great reasons to get involved now:

1. After the equipment, there’s no cost to participate (you can’t say that about golf or yard saling)

2. It’s a great way to teach your kids about history, geology, and science without a single lecture

3. It’s Green – all those nails and pull-tabs you find on the way to valuable gold go in the trash instead of continuing to pollute the earth

4. It’s more fun than going to the gym and all the bending and walking really does count as a workout

5. The treasure is waiting!

Using Metal Detector Reviews

If you’re reading this, odds are good you are looking for metal detector reviews because you are thinking about buying one.  Even though metal detecting is a rapidly growing hobby, or even a business for some, most of us don’t live within driving distance of a store with more than one or two choices of metal detectors. That’s not a lot to choose from when there are actually quite a few different models available. Which means most of us buy one online or through some other form of mail order, making the reviews that much more critical.

Things to think about before reading metal detector reviews

It’s easy to get excited about all the bells and whistles but the truth is that most metal detectors can do the basics adequately (find a penny on the sidewalk, etc.) so set your budget upfront and stick to it. You can always upgrade later and sell your used metal detector to someone else starting out:

  • What’s your budget?
  • Where do you want to use it? The backyard, golf course, the beach, the attic? or all of the above?  How you answer this will help you narrow your selection.
  • How experienced are you and how much time are you willing to invest in learning this new tool?  If you’ve never metal detected before and you’re headed out on vacation next week, you may not want the detector that requires a great deal of configuration of computer settings.

Things to look for when reading metal detector reviews

You may not find all of these answered in a single review, but you should be able to piece the information together from a combination of reviews and the manufacturing company’s website:

  • Price range – individual prices for a specific metal detector may vary slightly between retailers but you should be able to get a general sense of the price range from the reviews
  • Service and warranty – the importance of this will likely be proportional to the cost, the more you spend the more important it is to know how you will be able to deal with faulty electronics or a damaged coil, including availability of replacement parts.
  • Weight – metal detectors work by swinging the detecting coil over the surface slowly at an even distance from the ground, that means all the weight of the detector will be moved constantly with one arm.
  • Adjustability – Because the detector needs to held close to the ground, it’s important that it can be made short or long enough for you to hold it comfortably at that position without bending over.
  • Extras – depending on where and how you plan to use a metal detector look for things like a headphone jack if you will be using it in populated public areas, or water-proofness if you want to head to the beach
  • Finds – what have people found with this same detector? In what soil or sand conditions?  Do those compare with where you are planning to use it.  Note that this last piece of information may be found in metal detecting forums rather than metal detector reviews.

Underwater Metal Detectors

The lure of pirate treasure (or anything akin to that) is what gets many people into metal detecting in the first place.  If you are at all interested in diving with a metal detector than you will need very specialized equipment. That may also be true for low surf detecting or even some beaches that retain a lot of water and have high mineralization that may throw a more standard detector off.

Be aware that the laws of metal detecting and treasure hunting are often different in the water, even in just a few inches! Your best bet is to check with a local chapter of a national metal detecting association to find out what applies – there can be both regional, state, and federal laws in play that can be difficult to sort out for the novice.

Unfortunately underwater metal detectors are some of the most expensive on the market but they’re also some of the best electronics available. To get you started, here are the primary models of underwater metal detectors – click the links below to read the related metal detector reviews.
